NetUK2 wrap-up: Advancing global dialogue on internet governance

date2025-07-09 08:15:38

NetUK2, held in London, served as a critical meeting, as a follow-up to the inaugural NetUK, this second edition demonstrated both the urgency and complexity of reforming digital governance structures in an increasingly decentralised world.

Sessions throughout the event tackled key issues such as IP resource management, transparency in dispute resolution, and bridging gaps between operational realities and policy frameworks.

NetUK2 was not merely a platform for dialogue—it was a call to action. Attendees from Europe, Africa, Asia voiced a shared commitment to co-develop frameworks that ensure equity, resilience, and trust in Internet number governance.

NetUK2 highlights securing networks and building digital talent

Spoofed traffic continues to pose a significant threat to internet service providers, with attackers able to forge IP headers to evade detection, manipulate routing tables, or launch man-in-the-middle attacks. In his presentation, Ryce underscored the importance of proactive ingress filtering as a means of mitigating such threats. His recommendations reflect broader industry initiatives aimed at strengthening routing integrity, including community efforts like the MANRS programme.

Equally vital is the development of human capital. As the UK’s technology sector expands, so too does the need for clearly defined pathways in digital skills training. Bauer’s framework directly supports this by offering IT professionals structured routes for career progression. It also complements broader public and private sector strategies—such as those championed by TechUK—to bridge digital skill shortages and enhance national cyber resilience.

By spotlighting both technical and human-centred challenges, NetUK 2025 reaffirmed the deep interdependence between network security and workforce capability. The forum remains a key venue for fostering collaboration within the UK’s digital infrastructure ecosystem.
