Following the Asia Interconnect World Forum 2025 held at Hilton Tokyo, LARUS reflects on the vital conversations that shaped the event. With Asia-Pacific's growing role in global data traffic, discussions centred on regional connectivity, submarine cable investment, and the evolving regulatory environment.

Building the backbone of Asia’s digital future

The forum opened with a sharp focus on the infrastructure underpinning Asia’s booming data economy. With a projected data traffic CAGR of over 30% through 2025, the region’s demand for high-capacity, low-latency connectivity is at an all-time high.

Industry leaders from major cloud service providers and digital platforms—including AWS, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Netflix—emphasised the urgent need to enhance regional interconnection frameworks. Discussions pointed to the growing complexity of managing digital infrastructure in an environment shaped by increasing regulatory scrutiny and cross-border data dependencies.

Japan and Singapore emerged as key strategic hubs. Their geographic advantage and supportive digital policies have made them central to the development of interconnection ecosystems that link Northeast and Southeast Asia. These cities are well-positioned to facilitate seamless data exchange across one of the most dynamic digital corridors in the world.

Lu Heng on navigating data sovereignty and regulation in Asia

A highlight of the forum was the panel titled "Data Sovereignty and Cross-Border Regulations: Navigating the Complexities in Asia", moderated by Andrew Green of JLL. The discussion brought together voices from academia, consulting, and industry, including LARUS CEO Lu Heng.

Lu Heng addressed the increasingly fragmented regulatory landscape across Asia, where diverging national data laws pose significant barriers to efficient cross-border data flows. He warned that strict data localisation mandates risk creating technical silos and increasing operational costs for global service providers.

"Data sovereignty should not become a barrier to innovation," said Lu. "We must seek regional alignment to protect privacy while enabling international collaboration." His comments echoed the broader panel consensus that building regulatory bridges is essential for the future of interconnection in the region.

Fostering collaboration for a resilient digital ecosystem

As the digital economy matures, the need for aligned regulatory frameworks, scalable infrastructure, and trusted cross-border cooperation has never been more pressing. Discussions at the Asia Interconnect World Forum made clear that technical progress must be matched by governance innovation.

LARUS remains committed to advocating for transparent, interoperable policies that support an open and secure Internet. We believe in a future where data flows responsibly and efficiently—empowering users, businesses, and communities across Asia.
