Japan Cloud & Datacenter Convention 2025: Innovation and sustainability in focus

The Japan Cloud & Datacenter Convention 2025, held at Hilton Tokyo on June 6, gathered industry leaders and experts to explore the critical trends shaping Japan’s cloud and datacenter landscape. With sustainability and innovation at the core, the event highlighted how Japan is advancing its digital infrastructure to meet future demands.

Japan’s datacenter evolution: Embracing green and edge technologies

As Japan aims to maintain its leadership in global cloud and datacenter operations, the convention underscored key developments including investments in green technologies, AI-driven automation, and expanding edge computing capabilities. Major urban centers like Tokyo, Osaka, and Yokohama continue to spearhead growth, while emerging regions such as Hokkaido and Kyoto show promising potential.

The collaborative efforts highlighted at the event reflect a shared commitment to building a sustainable, resilient datacenter ecosystem that supports Japan’s digital-first economy and global connectivity ambitions.

Lu Heng’s keynote: Unlocking IP address portability for a borderless internet

A pivotal moment of the convention was the keynote delivered by Lu Heng, CEO of LARUS, titled “Portability of IP Addresses – The Next Essential Internet Development.” Lu outlined the challenges posed by the current regional governance model of IP addresses, which limits true global usability despite the inherently borderless nature of the Internet.

He introduced a visionary approach aligned with the ongoing update of ICP-2 guidelines, advocating for decoupling IP addresses from fixed Regional Internet Registry (RIR) boundaries. By repositioning RIRs as registrars rather than gatekeepers, Lu emphasized the potential to enable seamless IP transfers across regions.

According to Lu, this model promises multiple benefits: streamlined global network operations, smoother mergers and acquisitions, improved resource allocation, reduced legal complexities, and ultimately, a stronger, more interoperable internet.

“As demand for global digital infrastructure surges, so must our approach to IP governance,” Lu said. “Portability is fundamental to building a truly borderless internet.”

Looking forward: Sustaining Japan’s digital future

The Japan Cloud & Datacenter Convention reaffirmed the crucial intersection of technological innovation and sustainability in shaping the country’s digital infrastructure. LARUS remains committed to advancing these goals, driving policies and solutions that foster openness, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
